Can a naloxone prescription prevent overdose from pain medication?

If you are taking prescription opioid medication for pain relief, talk to your physician about a naloxone prescription. Naloxone, also known as Narcan®, can help prevent risks associated with opiate overdose.

A study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine suggest that having a naloxone prescription reduces the chances of overdose and possible emergency room visits. The study followed 1,985 adults receiving long-term opioid therapy for pain. Patients who received a naloxone prescription had 47% fewer opioid-related emergency department visits in the 6 months after receipt of the prescription and 63% fewer visits after 1 year. What is the role of naloxone in preventing overdose and treating addiction?

Naloxone is a medication used to block the effects of opioid medication, especially in overdose, meaning that it binds to opioid receptors and can reverse and block the effects of other opioids, such as such as heroin, morphine, and oxycodone. Naloxone works to prevent you from feeling the highs of addiction, and it is an important tool in safely weaning off addictive mediation.
