You may know it as kratom, 7-OH, extract shots, gas-station pills, or even “legal opioids.” These products are often marketed as natural, herbal, and safe—but that does not mean they are harmless.

- Feel Free®

- Gas-station pills
At Thalia Medical Center, we are seeing more people who never expected to become dependent on kratom or highly concentrated 7-hydroxymitragynine products. Most did not start because they wanted to develop a problem. They started because they were trying to solve one.
- Managing chronic pain
- Coping with anxiety
- Looking for more energy or focus
- Getting through a stressful season
- Trying to avoid prescription opioids
At first, it may have felt like something that helped. But over time, the relationship can change. What began as occasional use can become something you need just to get through the day.
How dependence develops
Why can kratom be addictive?
Kratom comes from the leaves of Mitragyna speciosa, a tree native to Southeast Asia. It contains compounds that interact with some of the same brain receptors involved in opioid effects.
At lower amounts, some people report feeling more alert, focused, or energized. At higher amounts, kratom can produce relaxation, sedation, pain relief, or euphoria.
The tricky part is that many people do not realize physical dependence is developing until they try to cut back.
Signs worth noticing
When does kratom use become a problem?
There is not always one obvious moment when things change. Often, the shift is subtle.
- Do I need more than I used to?
- Do I feel sick or anxious when I don’t take it?
- Have I tried to quit but couldn’t?
- Am I spending more money or hiding my use?
- Am I taking it just to feel “normal” instead of feeling good?
The hidden cost
What can withdrawal feel like?
Many people are surprised by withdrawal because they did not think of kratom as something that could cause dependence. Symptoms can include:
- Anxiety or irritability
- Muscle aches
- Trouble sleeping
- Sweating or chills
- Nausea or diarrhea
- Restlessness
- Strong cravings
Instead of using kratom to feel better, you may find yourself using it simply to avoid feeling worse.
That shift can feel frustrating and confusing—but it is something that can be treated.
Understanding the “natural” misconception
A lot of people assume that because kratom comes from a plant, it must be safe. But many substances that affect the brain come from natural sources.
The important question is not only where something comes from.
Is it helping you move toward the life you want—or has it started limiting your choices?
You do not have to hit rock bottom
Treatment is about understanding, not judgment
If kratom or 7-OH is affecting your health, relationships, work, finances, or peace of mind, that is reason enough to seek support. You do not have to lose everything before asking for help.
Dependence is a medical condition—not a lack of willpower. It involves changes in the brain, behavior, and the body’s response to a substance.
At Thalia Medical Center, we provide compassionate, evidence-based care for people questioning their relationship with kratom, 7-OH, or other substances. Whether you are just beginning to wonder if there is a problem or have tried to stop and found it harder than expected, we will help you understand your options and create a plan that fits your goals.

or has it started taking control?”
