Can medication cure addiction?
Addiction is a chronic relapsing disease and, like other chronic diseases, does not really have a ‘cure’.
NPR reports that there are multiple factors contributing to addiction, among them a change in an addicts limbic system that causes an addict to pursue addictive substances again and again.
These changes in a person’s chemistry can’t be fought with detox alone.
However, medications that have been proven to aid in addiction recovery are out there.
At Thalia Medical Center, we do recognize the importance of addiction-fighting medication when combined with lifestyle changes, therapy, dietary changes, and coordinated support from addiction specialists.
